Step-by-step manual
01The business question
A colleague left, and all that is left is the load script, QX_Distributors_Full.qvs. No diagram, no notes. Before anyone changes it, the team needs to see what it does and to document it.
02Before you start
- Unzip the episode package:
QX_Distributors_Full.qvsand all the data files. There is nostart.qep: this episode starts from the script alone. - The script is the complete model of episodes 1 to 6, written by hand the way a Qlik developer would.
03Step by step
-
1
Import the script
Click Reverse Engineering in the top bar and pick
QX_Distributors_Full.qvs. Q-Expert reads it statement by statement and draws it as a new project.
Figure 7.1 — Import the script -
2
Read the log
The results window counts the nodes created and lists every assumption with its source line. Two statements stay as Raw Script on purpose:
DECLARE FIELD DEFINITIONandDERIVE FIELDS, the signup date's auto calendar, which has no node of its own. Download log keeps it as a text file.
Figure 7.2 — Read the log -
3
Walk the canvas
Zoom out: masters, sales, rates, returns, budget and the model, the same story built by hand in episodes 1 to 6. Auto Layout arranges it by layer if you want it tidier.

Figure 7.3 — Walk the canvas -
4
Every node is editable
Select
Fact_Sales: on Columns it has the same%keys and fields as episode 6's model. Any node can be changed like one you drew yourself.
Figure 7.4 — Every node is editable -
5
Generate, import again, document
Generate Syntax, then import the generated script again: the same canvas comes back. Export writes the script, its Documentation (an HTML page in English or Spanish, step by step) or a JSON description, so the next person gets a document, not just a script.

Figure 7.5 — Generate, import again, document
04Check your result
- The imported model has the same seven tables as episode 6, with the same fields:
Fact_Sales,Fact_BudgetVsActual,Dim_Customer,Dim_Product,Dim_Branch,Dim_SalespersonandDim_Calendar. - Run the generated script in Qlik: the same seven QVDs in
Model/, with the same row counts as episode 6. - Q-Expert writes the imported script back as
_Main, the only part you paste into Qlik, and one.qvsfile per tab that_Mainreads withMUST_INCLUDE. All of them should match the ones below, except the date in the header and a// Q-Expert · Ref …line with your own reference.
_Main
Paste into QlikThis is the only script you paste into Qlik Sense: open the app's Data load editor, replace its content with this and reload. Each $(MUST_INCLUDE=…) line reads one of the files below in its place, so the rest of the model never goes into the editor.

05Why this way
- A script is a design nobody can see. Drawn as a canvas, the layers, the joins and the stores are visible at once, and so is anything odd.
- Equivalent, not a copy. Q-Expert may write the script back in its own order and style, but the model it loads is the same: same tables, same fields, nothing left over.
- Assumptions are written down. Every inference the import makes is in the log, with its line, so a reviewer can check it instead of trusting it.
- Documentation is part of the handover. The exported documentation tells the next developer what each step does, in plain language.
